I must say first of all, I loved the poem at the very end, "Swedish Heart". Just lovely. ( earned 1 more Star )Onto the book, "Onions" .... it had a good plot and a great mystery, actually several little sub-mysteries going, which should make for a really good book. And this could have been a really good book.
If only it hadn't been bogged down with two ongoing, very annoying, reoccurring themes ... I mean so annoying as to give the reader, myself, pause to roll her eyes and say "Oh come on!!! Again with this ____".
Said reader likes to read to relax, not be annoyed ...
Annoying theme one: Repeating "I love you" in every context imaginable in one single situation. Then explaining the why's and the how's to the reader over and over and over and over and OVER. OKAY! I get it! They're in love! They've never felt this way before and never, ever will again, no mater how long they live, E V E R. Can we move on now?
Annoying theme two: Sex. Or should I say, S E X. Sex between couples in love is expected, apparently more so even before marriage. The main Character, Nick, one would have thought, might have learned from past experiences and not jumped into having sex right away, but no. And for a Doctor, not too bright.
He, and other main character, Claire ( I love that name ) , have sex everywhere. No matter how inappropriate. House full of people? No problem. Thin, squeaky floorboards? No problem. Daughter in the other room? No problem. At Nick's office at a HOSPITAL!?! No problem.
Whose parent acts like this????? What Doctor, other than on Soap Operas, would jeopardize their livelihood?
Onions is 248 pages ... if all the filler "I love you" and un-necessary sex were edited out, perhaps 200 pages might remain. But, it would be a great little book.
Plus, that Claire, she sure can take a lot and keep on ticking, lol
